River Otters on Long Lake!!!
Long Lake has been blessed with 4-6 River Otters frolicking on our lake (and on occasion, someone's dock!).
Samantha Berger, our Natural Resources Coordinator in Apple Valley took the time to provide answers to our residents' most frequently asked questions.
Where do they come from? From other otters, of course! Like any wild animal, they probably found Long Lake when they were searching for new territory and made this place home. Otters have made a comeback since the 1980s after populations declined from the fur trade.
How do they enter our Lake? I imagine they started from another waterbody and made their way to Long Lake in search of food and shelter. Perhaps they scurried their way from areas near Lebanon park and the zoo.
What will they do for the winter? They do not hibernate; they usually make use of temporary shelters during the winter.
The DNR does provide a great back story and info on otters.
