April 2016 LLWA Meeting / Aquatic Plant Survey Results

APRIL 2016 MEETING NOTICE

The next meeting of the Long Lake Watershed Association will be held on Saturday, April 23 starting at 10:15 a.m. This meeting will be held in the large meeting room at the Apple Valley Public Library located at 14955 Galaxie Avenue.

NEW AQUATIC PLANT POINT-INTERCEPT SURVEY FOR LONG LAKE

New results from an aquatic plant survey conducted by Blue Water Science was published in late December 2015. The survey, conducted in early summer (May) and late summer (August) 2015, found that on May 22 curlyleaf pond weed was at 43 of 49 sample sites on Long Lake. However, on the sample date in August, no curlyleaf was observed and the amount of stringy pondweed had declined considerably.

The report concludes that, "Curlyleaf pondweed previously has been managed in Long Lake with drawdowns. Over the 2009-2010 and the 2013-2014 winters, Long Lake was drawn down. In the early summer of 2010 and 2014, curlyleaf distribution was reduced compared to surveys conducted prior to the drawdown. However, curlyleaf data from May in 2015 indicates curlyleaf pondweed has returned from the 2013-2014 drawdown."

You can download the complete survey from the LLWA homepage.
